This was an interesting video on the 4-Topping Pizza Problem. In line with what we are doing in class and the themes of the first 2 videos, this one focused on various cognitive methods used for solving the pizza problem. Part 1 focused on various methods (lists, drawings, Unifix cubes and tables) that students used, but focused in particular on one student who used a unique table comprised of 1’s and 0’s to represent combinations of possible toppings. Part 2 focused not only finding the solution, but on proving how students knew they had the correct answer.
This video showed the beginnings of algebraic thinking begin at an earlier age than perhaps we thought. Variables such as x and y were not necessarily the focus of this video, but we did see in a few ways (cube color, 1’s and 0’s) how symbolic representation began in grades 4 and 5. More specifically, algebraic variables such as x can be used to represent something (amount of text messages a student sent in a particular month), and in this video we saw (yellow represents cheese) the underpinnings of this line of thinking.
